The 52nd Street Project’s
Spring Sing Thing: A Garden Variety Benefit was held on Monday, May 10 at Espace.
Martha Plimpton hosted the event, which was directed by Jonathan Bernstein and featured musical direction by Kimberly Grigsby.
Among the performers were Broadway and Off-Broadway veterans Michael Cerveris, Emma Hunton, James Monroe Iglehart, Rebecca Naomi Jones, Matthew Morrison, Greg Naughton, and Kelli O’Hara. They were joined by several of the project’s participants, including Wendell Joseph and Melissa Reboleddo.
The 52nd Street Project, founded by songwriter Willie Reale, matches the kids of Hell’s Kitchen (ages 9-18) with professional theater artists to create original theater. The benefit concert featured songs with music by Brian Lowdermilk, Jeanine Tesori and Tom Kitt and lyrics by the young people who are served by the organization.
