Cast members from the original Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s Merrily We Roll Along reunited, many for the first time in a decade, Tuesday, February 14, to view the current New York City Center Encores! concert-staging of the legendary flop, which ran for 16 performances at the Alvin Theatre in 1981.
Sondheim himself was on hand for the festivities, which included a pre-performance reception, as well as a special curtain call during with he and the original cast members joined the current company on the City Center stage to sing an encore of “Old Friends.”
During the reception, original cast members — including original lead actors Ann Morrison, Lonny Price, and Jim Walton, as well as Mana Allen, Liz Callaway, Terry Finn, Marc Moritz, Tonya Pinkins, Abigail Pogrebin, Gary Stevens, and Maryrose Wood — reminisced and greeted current cast members Colin Donnell, Celia Keenan-Bolger, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Elizabeth Stanley, Betsy Wolfe, Adam Grupper, Zachary Unger and others.
James Lapine directs the Encores! production, which runs at New York City Center through Sunday, February 19.
