Annette Bening and Angus Macfayden Set for UCLA Live's Medea logo

Three-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening and Angus Macfayden will star in UCLA Live's production of Euripides' Medea, September 18-October 18 at the Freud Playhouse. Croatian director Lenka Udovicki will helm the production.

Medea is the centerpiece UCLA Live's eighth International Theatre Festival, which will also include Druid Ireland theater company's The Walworth Farce (November 11-15) and The New Electric Ballroom (December 2-6), both by Enda Walsh. Italy's Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio will present Purgatorio, directed by Romeo Castellucci, October 28-31. The festival will also include Polish companies TR Warszawa's T.E.O.R.E.M.A.T. (November 18 and 19) and Teatr Zar's Triptych (December 1-3), and the all-teenage cast production of Once and For All We're Going to Tell You Who We Are So Shut Up and Listen, by Belgian theater company Ontroerend Goed (November 3-7).

There will be a special gala performance celebrating the 25th anniversary of L.A.-based Latino performance troupe Culture Clash on October 30, with guests including Zack de la Rocha of Rage Against the Machine, comedian Carlos Mencia, singer-songwriter Michelle Shocked, and actor Edward James Olmos. Dance programming will include Hofesh Shechter Company, DV8 Physical Theatre, Reggie Wilson/Fist & Heel Performance Group, Alberta Ballet, and Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet.

Music programming will include Ralph Stanley & His Clinch Mountain Boys plus Cherryholmes, The Tiger Lillies, Loudon Wainwright and Richard Thompson, They Might Be Giants, Los Lobos, Perla Batalla, Max Raabe & Palast Orchester, Randy Newman, Arlo Guthrie, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, McCoy Tyner, The Blind Boys of Alabama and Allen Toussaint, Monterey Jazz Festival on Tour featuring singer Kurt Elling, violinist Regina Carter, guitarist Russell Malone and the Kenny Barron Trio (pianist Barron, bassist Kiyoshi Kitagawa, and drummer Francisco Mela), Paco Peña, Gal Costa, Baaba Maal, Béla Fleck, Zakir Hussain & Edgar Meyer, Felix Hell Organ Recital, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Ian Bostridge, and Felix Hell.

The season will also include writers and illustrators including Khaled Hosseini, Margaret Atwood, R. Crumb, Carlos Fuentes, Neil Gaiman, Mary Oliver, Harvey Pekar, Allison Bechdel, and David Sedaris. There will also be film events celebrating Laurel and Hardy, Alfred Hitchcock, and composer Bernard Hermann.
