Alex Timbers in Talks to Direct Disney's Cruella, Starring Emma Stone
The Tony-nominated director may helm Disney's 101 Dalmatians-inspired live-action film.
According to various reports, two-time Tony nominee Alex Timbers is in talks to direct Disney's Cruella, a live-action origin story of 101 Dalmatians villain Cruella De Vil. Emma Stone, who received Golden Globe and SAG nominations earlier this week for her performance in the musical film La La Land, is set to star.
The news comes on the heels of Timbers' dismissal from Disney's stage adaptation of the musical film Frozen. That musical is scheduled to premiere at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts in August 2017 before a Broadway arrival in the spring of 2018.
Production on Cruella is slated to begin early next year under producers Andrew Gunn and Marc Platt. Tony nominee Jez Butterworth (Jerusalem, The River) penned the project's latest script.
Timbers is currently represented on Broadway by Nick Kroll and John Mulaney's Oh, Hello at the Lyceum Theatre. He earned Tony nominations for his direction of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson and Peter and the Starcatcher and is about to begin rehearsals at the Public Theater with Joan of Arc: Into the Fire, his second collaboration with Talking Heads' David Byrne following the Imelda Marcos musical hit Here Lies Love.
