Aladdin Reunion! Film Stars Scott Weinger, Gilbert Gottfried, and More Meet Broadway Cast
Stars of the original 1992 movie gathered with their Broadway counterparts to celebrate the new Blu-ray release of the animated classic.
The stars of the 1992 Disney animated classic Aladdin reunited — and met with the stars of the Broadway production — to celebrate the new Diamond Edition release of the film, which hits shelves on Tuesday, October 13.
On hand for the event were film stars Scott Weinger (Aladdin), Linda Larkin (Jasmine), and Gilbert Gottfried (Iago), as well as Broadway cast members Adam Jacobs (Aladdin), Courtney Reed (Jasmine), and Tony winner James Monroe Iglehart (Genie). Jonathan Freeman, who voiced the role of Jafar onscreen and plays the character for the stage production, was also present.
The Diamond Edition release of Aladdin marks the first time the work has ever been seen on Blu-Ray and Digital HD. It contains bonus features including deleted songs, a behind-the-scenes special that follows the creation of the Broadway production, as well as newly animated versions of Robin Williams' Genie outtakes.
Aladdin began performances at the New Amsterdam Theatre on February 26, 2013, and opened March 20. It received five Tony Award nominations and 7 Drama Desk Award nominations. Iglehart received both honors for his performance as Genie. The film version won two Academy Awards: Best Original Score, and Best Original Song for "A Whole New World".
Featuring a score by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman, and Tim Rice, with songs such as "Friend Like Me," Aladdin features a new book and additional lyrics by Chad Beguelin (The Wedding Singer). The Broadway production is directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw (Something Rotten!).
