War Horse will launch a national tour in June 2012. The production is scheduled to play 20 U.S. cities during the 2012-2013 season, launching with an engagement at the Ahmanson Theatre, which as previously announced will run June 13 -July 12, 2012. Additional tour engagements are being planned for San Francisco, Dallas, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, and East Lansing, among others. Additional details will be announced shortly.

In addition, it has been announced that a new production of War Horse will also be mounted at Toronto’s Princess of Wales Theatre in February 2012 for an open-ended run.

War Horse is based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo and adapted by Nick Stafford, directed by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris, and presented in association with Handspring Puppet Company. The piece centers on the bond between a young man and his horse, Joey, and the events that happen after Joey is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France at the onset of World War I.

The Broadway production of the piece, playing at Lincoln Center Theater, has been nominated for Tony Awards for Best Play, Best Direction of a Play, Best Set Design for a Play, Best Scenic Design of a Play, Best Lighting Design of a Play, and Best Sound Design of a Play. In addition, Handspring Puppet Company has received a Special Tony Award for their integral puppet design for the production.
