Harvey Fierstein will return to Toronto playing Tevye in the touring production of Fiddler on the Roof for a limited one-week engagement at the Canon Theatre, June 8-13. Sammy Dallas Bayes has directed and choreographed the production, based on Jerome Robbins’ original.

The tour stop has been added following five weeks of packed houses and standing ovations which greeted Fierstein’s recent Toronto performance in the production. In a press statement, producer David Mirvish said, “As always we listen to the audience and we had to respond. But it wasn’t easy to find an available week when both the great Harvey Fierstein and this very moving production of Fiddler on the Roof were available to return to our city. Luckily it has now all worked out and we couldn’t be happier.”

Fierstein joined the touring production of Fiddler in late 2009, replacing an ailing Topol. He also previously played his role in the last Broadway revival of the musical. He is a four-time Tony Award winner, receiving two in 1982 for Torch Song Trilogy, while his other Tonys are for his book to La Cage aux Folles and his performance as Edna Turnblad in Hairspray.

The creative team for the tour includes Ken Daigle (assistant direction and choreography), Steve Gilliam (sets), Tony Ray Hicks (costumes), Ken Billington and Jason Kantrowitz (lighting), Duncan Robert Edwards (sound), Larry Blank (orchestrations), and David Andrews Rogers (musical direction).
