Tony Award-winning playwright and director Mary Zimmerman (Metamorphoses), coming off a recent regional run of her musical adaptation of Disney's The Jungle Book, will bring her theatrical rendition of the classic Chinese fable The White Snake to the McCarter Theatre Center. Performances are scheduled to run from October 15-November 3 on the Matthews stage.

Zimmerman premiered The White Snake at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in 2012. The piece tells the ancient Chinese story of a white serpent who must come down from her mountain in the spirit world to take human form if she wishes to win the heart of her beloved. Zimmerman has shared a number of her other works with McCarter audiences in the past, including The Odyssey, Secret in the Wings, and Argonautika.

"Mary is a visionary, adapting ancient myths and fairy tales from around the world into new theatrical masterpieces," said McCarter Theatre Artistic Director Emily Mann. "Her work is always inventive, sublime, and revelatory, and it has been a joy to share it with you over the years. The White Snake is possibly my favorite of all of her wonderful projects, and I hope McCarter's audiences will enjoy it immensely."

The cast features Matt DeCaro, Emily Sophia Knapp, Vin Kridakorn, Tanya McBride, Jon Norman Schneider, Eliza Shin, Lisa Tejero, Kristin Villanueva, Amy Kim Waschke, Gary Wingert, and Wai Yim. The ensemble also includes three musicians: Tessa Brinckman (flutes), Ronnie Malley (strings and percussion), and Michal Palzewicz (cello).

The White Snake creative team includes Daniel Ostling (scenic design), Mara Blumenfeld (costume design), T.J. Gerckens (lighting design), Andre Pluess (original music and sound design), and Shawn Sagady (projection design).
