The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee starts its run tonight at Bucks County Playhouse.

The one-act musical comedy presents an eclectic group of six mid-pubescent students who are competing for first place in the spelling bee championship of a lifetime. Scattered among attempts at spelling words, some of which may be made-up, the competitors bring to life hilarious and poignant stories of their home lives. With each step closer to the prize, the tweens learn to dread the soul-crushing sound of the "ding" that signals a spelling mistake.

The musical, originally conceived by Rebecca Feldman, is helmed by Jessica Stone with choreography by Connor Gallagher, and features music and lyrics written by William Finn and a book by Rachel Sheinkin.

The cast includes Becca Ayers as Rona, Lisa Peretti as Oliv’s Mom, Ryan Breslin as Leaf Coneybear and Carl Schwartzandgrunenierre, Colin Hanlon as Vice Principal Douglas Panch, Caitlin Houlahan as Olive Ostrovsky, Katie Ladner as Logainne Schwartzandgrunenierre, Maurice Murphy as Mitch Mahoney, Dan Schwartzandgrunenierre, and Olive’s Dad, Paul Pilcz as William Barfee, George Salazar as Chip Tolentino and Jesus Christ, and Sumi Yu as Marcy Park.

The creative team includes Charlie Corcoran (set design), Tilly Grimes (costume design), Austin Smith (lighting design), Charles Coes (sound design), Stephen Stivo Arnoczy (projections design), and Will Shuler (musical direction).

Performances will run through September 6.
