Bernadette Peters Benefit Concert Raises $615,000

Bernadette Peters: A Special Concert for Broadway Barks Because Broadway Cares, which was held at the Minskoff Theatre on November 9, raised $615,000 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA) and Broadway Barks.

Peters appeared with a 30-piece orchestra under the musical direction of Marvin Laird. The act, directed by Richard Jay-Alexander, featured special appearances by Mary Tyler Moore and original Into the Woods cast members Joy Franz, Merle Louise, Kay McClelland, and Lauren Mitchell. In addition to a special opening number, Peters sang numerous songs with music and/or lyrics by Stephen Sondheim (who was in attendance), including “In Buddy’s Eyes,” ” Losing My Mind,” “Some People,” “Rose’s Turn,” “No One Is Alone,” “Children and Art,” and “Johanna.”

During the two-and-a-half hour concert, Peters also sang “Nothing Like a Dame,” “Some Enchanted Evening,” “Mister Snow,” “Fever,” “Oh, Shenandoah,” “When You Wish Upon a Star,” and “Kramer’s Song,” which she wrote for her dog, who appeared on stage with her for the show’s finale.
