Antonio Banderas to Star in Broadway Revival of Zorba, David Leveaux to Direct

Antonio Banderas will play the title role in a revival of Zorba that’s aiming to open on Broadway in September 2011, according to a report in Variety. David Leveaux will direct the production.

Based on the 1946 novel by Nikos Kazantzakis titled Zorba the Greek, Zorba, with a score by John Kander and Fred Ebb, follows the life-changing friendship of an staid American with the titular Greek. Barry and Fran Weissler will produce the show. Additional casting and creative team will be announced shortly.

Banderas and Leveaux previously worked together on the Broadway revival of Nine. Banderas received a Tony Award nomination and a Drama Desk Award for his work in the show. Among his many film credits are Evita, Shrek 2, The Mask of Zorro, And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself, and The House of the Spirits.
