Broadway Theaters to Dim Lights in Memory of Ellen Stewart and Romulus Linney

The marquees of Broadway theaters in New York will be dimmed in honor of both Ellen Stewart and Romulus Linney on Wednesday, January 19, at exactly 8pm for one minute.

Stewart, founder of the La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club, died of natural causes after an extended illness, on January 13. She was 91. In January 1993, she was inducted into the “Broadway Theatre Hall of Fame,” becoming the first Off-Off-Broadway Producer to ever receive this honor. For TheaterMania’s full obit, click here.

Linney, a prolific playwright, died of lung cancer on Saturday, January 15 at his home in Germantown, New York. He was 80. His The Love Suicide at Schofield Barracks was performed on Broadway in 1972. He was also the founding Playwright-in-Residence at Signature Theatre Company during the 1991-92 season.
