Arthur Gelb, Terrence McNally, Jeanine Tesori, et al. Set for Glimmerglass’ ShowTalk Series

The Glimmerglass Festival has announced its lineup for ShowTalk, a series where visiting scholars and artists explore topics related to the company’s 2011 Festival.

The series will begin with a conversation to be offered at the Fenimore Art Museum on July 30 at 10am. The event will feature Carol Troyen, curator of American Paintings at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston; playwright and librettist Terrence McNally, and Arthur and Barbara Gelb, biographers of playwright Eugene O’Neill. The participants will be discussing issues relating to the Glimmerglass double bill of Jeanine Tesori and Tony Kushner’s look at an episode in O’Neill’s life, A Blizzard On Marblehead Neck, and John Musto and Mark Campbell’s Later the Same Evening, which is based on five Edward Hopper paintings.

On August 6 at 10am at the Cooperstown Theatre Festival, Gregory Nagy, director of the Harvard Center for Hellenic Studies and Peter Bloom, professor of music as Smith College will be discussing Euripides’ Medea as well as Cherubini’s opera about the Greek heroine, which is also part of the Glimmerglass season.

The third offering in the series will be held on August 13 at 10am at the Otesaga Resort Hotel. During this event three panelists will each offer insights into three separate aspects of the company’s work. Writer and historian John Julius Norwich will discuss Carmen, Marshall Pynkoski, artistic director of Toronto’s Opera Atelier, will offer a French baroque program featuring the members of Glimmerglass’ apprentice program for young singers; and Tesori will discuss the piece she’s written with Kushner.
