Barbra Streisand will play the role of Momma Rose in a film remake of the musical Gypsy, according to an interview she gave to The Los Angeles Times. Warner Brothers and Joel Silver will be producers on the film.

No director has been confirmed, although Streisand told the Times she is considering helming the project.

Based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, the musical features a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne, and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Gypsy was originally given a film treatment in 1962 with Rosalind Russell as Rose. Bette Midler starred in the role in a 1993 made-for-TV movie. The show was most recently revived on Broadway in 2008, starring Patti LuPone, who won a Tony Award for her work as Rose.

Streisand appeared on Broadway in I Can Get It For You Wholesale and Funny Girl. Her films include Funny Girl, Funny Lady, Yentl, and Nuts. She has won the Oscar, Grammy, and Emmy Awards, a special Tony Award, and is a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honor.
