Oscar Winner Juliette Binoche to Make New York Stage Return in Antigone

Noted theatrical director Ivo van Hove (Scenes From a Marriage) will team up with Oscar winner and Tony nominee Juliette Binoche (The English Patient) on a new staging of Sophocles' Antigone, which will be presented as part of Brooklyn Academy of Music's Next Wave Festival, September 24-October 4. The work is a coproduction of London's Barbican and Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg.

Featuring a new translation by Anne Carson, the Greek tragedy, at BAM's Harvey Theater, will feature sets and lighting by Van Hove's frequent collaborator Jan Versweyveld, with costumes by An d’Huys, video by Tal Yarden, dramaturgy by Peter van Kraaij, and composition and sound design by Daniel Freitag.

This revival of Antigone is described as follows: "In Thebes, Antigone has refuted King Kreon’s order: that her traitorous brother’s body be left to rot outside the city gates. Vast monochrome videoscapes of sun and moon, sand and snow provide the backdrop to Van Hove’s taut, unsentimental account of a woman who, as removed from life as she is from death, ends up taking both into her own hands."

Binoche takes on the title role, with further casting to be announced. She made her New York stage debut in Harold Pinter's Betrayal in 2000, for which she was nominated for a Tony. Her many films also include Chocolat. At BAM, Van Hove has directed Angels in America and Roman Tragedies, with other productions including A View From the Bridge, The Little Foxes, and Hedda Gabler, among others.
