Oklahoma! Added to National Film Registry

Fred Zinnemann’s 1955 film version of the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical Oklahoma! is one of 25 films being added to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry. Films are chosen for inclusion because they are “culturally, historically, or aesthetcially” significant.

Oklahoma! starred Gordon MacRae, Shirley Jones, Charlotte Greenwood, Gloria Grahame, Gene Nelson, Rod Steiger, and Eddie Albert. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, and won for Best Music or Scoring of a Musical Picture and Best Sound Recording.

Among the other films being added to the registry are Grand Hotel (1932), The Women (1939), Wuthering Heights (1939), 12 Angry Men (1957), and Days of Heaven (1978). The Registry now totals 475 films.
