On Wednesday, October 13, the Tony Award-winning production of Matthew Bourne’s
Swan Lake opened at New York City Center, where it is set to play until November 7.
Among the celebrities in attendance were Tony Award winners Marcia Gay Harden, Christine Baranski, Donna McKechnie, David Alvarez, and Kiril Kulish, as well as noted director Sir Richard Eyre, Broadway veteran Jack Noseworthy, choreographer Sergio Trujillo, and opera star Elina Garanca.
Directed and choreographed by Bourne, the production is perhaps best known for replacing the traditional female corps de ballet with a menacing male ensemble. It features set and costume designs by Lez Brotherston and lighting design by Rick Fisher.
The show’s Broadway run during the 1998-1999 season won Bourne Tony Awards for both direction and choreography, and an additional Tony for Lez Brotherton’s costumes. Additional awards include a Drama Desk for Unique Theatrical Experience.
