Mahagonny with LuPone and McDonald to Get DVD and PBS Airings

The L.A. Opera’s production of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s opera Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, starring Tony Award winners Audra McDonald and Patti LuPone, will be released on high-definition DVD by EuroArts Music International on December 18. In addition, it will air on PBS station WNET (Channel 13) as part of its Great Performances series on December 17 and on KCET-TV on December 22.

The production, which bowed in February, was directed by Tony Award winner John Doyle, with music direction by James Conlon. The creative team included Mark Bailey (sets), Ann Hould-Ward (costumes), Thomas C. Hase (lighting), and Dan Moses Schreier (sound).

The show’s cast also featured Anthony Dean Griffey as Jimmy MacIntyre, Robert Wörle as Fatty the Bookkeeper, John Easterlin as Jack O’Brien, Mel Ulrich as Bank Account Bill, Donnie Ray Albert as Trinity Moses, Derek Taylor as Toby Higgins, and Steven Humes as Alaska Wolf Joe.

In related news, the L.A. Opera’s production of Verdi’s La Traviata, starring Renee Fleming, Rolanda Villazon, and Renato Bruson will be released on DVD by Decca on October 30. That production was directed by Marta Domingo with music direction by Conlon.
