During the series, 12 performers competed for the opportunity to appear on the show. The final decision was made by series creator Ryan Murphy.
The series featured many members of the Glee cast as guest mentors, including Idina Menzel, Darren Criss, Dot-Marie Jones, and Harry Shum, Jr.
