Peter Scolari, Lisa Datz, Josh Prince, Brian Henderson, and Marilyn Sokol will co-star in In the Wings, a new comedy written by Tony Award-winning producer Stewart F. Lane. The production, to be directed by Jeremy Dobrish, will begin performances at the Promenade Theater on September 9 in advance of a September 28 opening.

The show will include original songs by Michael Garin. The scenic design is by William Barclay; costume design by Mattie Ullrich; lighting design by Phil Monat, and sound design by Jill B C DuBoff.

Set in 1978, In the Wings tells the story of Steve and Melinda, two aspiring actors in love with each other — although he’s Jewish and she isn’t. The couple gets their big break when they are cast in a new musical, I Married a Communist, written by their acting teacher Bernardo. But when the show moves to Broadway, only Melinda is asked to move with it. Can love survive?

Lane’s previous plays include If It Was Easy and The American Way. The producer of dozens of shows in New York and around the world, Lane won Tony Awards for Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Will Rogers Follies, and La Cage Aux Folles. He is also a producer of Princesses, which is currently having its pre-Broadway tryout at the Fifth Avenue Theater in Seattle.

Dobrish is the artistic director and co-founder of the adobe theater company, and has also written many of the works produced by the company including The Handless Maiden. His other directing credits include The Joys of Sex, Eight Days (Backwards), and Class Mothers ’68.

Scolari, who will play Bernardo, is best known for his starring roles on the television series Bosom Buddies (with Tom Hanks) and Newhart.
His Broadway credits include Sly Fox and Hairspray. He received an Obie Award for Moliere in Spite of Himself.

Datz, who will play Melinda, has appeared on Broadway in Titanic and The Full Monty. Prince, who will play Steve, has been seen on Broadway in Saturday Night Fever and Little Me. Henderson was most recently seen in the Shakespeare in the Park production of As You Like It. Sokol has starred on Broadway in Conversations with My Father, Grease, and The Great God Brown. She won an Obie Award for The Beggar’s Opera.
