Rocket to the Moon to be Presented at Bard

David Chandler, Stephanie Roth Haberle, Kelly Hutchinson, David Margulies, Danny Mastrogorgio, Danton Stone, and Henry Stram will star in a rare revival of Clifford Odets’ romantic drama Rocket to the Moon, July 14-24, as part of the Bard SummerScape series in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York.

The production will be directed by Daniel Fish, who most recently helmed the McCarter Theater’s production of Hamlet. Sets will be by Andrew Lieberman, costumes will be by Kate Voyce, and lighting will be by Jane Cox.

Rocket to the Moon concerns the relationships among a struggling dentist, his grieving wife, her manipulative father, and a young office assistant. It premiered on Broadway in 1938, directed by Harold Clurman, and with a cast led by Luther Adler, Morris Carnovsky, and Sanford Meisner. A 1986 television version starred John Malkovich, Judy Davis, Ian McShane, and Eli Wallach.

This year’s Summerscape series, which runs through August 28, focuses on the world of composer Aaron Copland. Other offerings include Marc Blitzstein’s opera Regina, as well as a screening of The Little Foxes (the opera’s source material), Copland’s opera The Tender Land, directed by Erika Schmidt, and a concert presentation of the John LaTouche/Jerome Moross musical The Golden Apple, conducted by Jonathan Tunick.
