92nd Street Y Announces 2009 Lyrics & Lyricists Season

The 92nd Street Y has announced the line-up for the 2009 season of Lyrics & Lyricists, the first under the stewardship of artistic director Deborah Grace Winer.

The series begins January 10-12 with Martin Charnin as guest director and host of Rodgers & …., which looks at Richard Rogers’ work with lyricists Lorenz Hart, Oscar Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Sheldon Harnick, and Charnin.

Up next, February 21-23, will be It Started With a Dream, an examination by David Zippel of his own lyrics as well as his personal favorites from the American Songbook. The series continues with Robert Kimball as director of Sunny Side Up: Roaring Through the Twenties with DeSylva, Brown & Henderson (April 4-6).

Rex Reed will host and direct The Man That Got Away: Ira After George, May 9-11, which looks at the work Ira Gershwin wrote with such composers as Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, and Kurt Weill. The series conclude with Billy Stritch’s program Sunday in New York Mel Torme In Words and Music (June 6-8).
