First NBC went Broadway with Smash, then the Oscars went Broadway with a Daniel Radcliffe/Joseph Gordon-Levitt soft shoe. Now highbrow, arty films are going Broadway with Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu's (Babel) Birdman.
Innaritu, an Oscar-nominated director, is creating a new project entitled Birdman with Fox Searchlight and New Regency that will feature big name movie stars Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts, and Zach Galifianakis. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film will be a dark comedy, a change from Innaritu's usually heavier fare.
Birdman tells the story of a former action star who is now producing a Broadway play based on a short story by Raymond Carver. Michael Keaton will play the movie's main character. Emma Stone will take on the role of his daughter/assistant, with Naomi Watts playing an actress in the play and Zach Galifianaks in the part of a producer.
The script is co-written by Nicolas Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris and Armando Bo and will be produced with Robert Graf and John Lesher.
Our fingers are crossed for an extended Emma Stone dance number.
