Plays by Tanya Barfield, David Cale, A.R. Gurney, Richard Nelson, and Bruce Norris will be presented by Playwrights Horizons during its 2006-2007 season.

Norris’ The Pain and the Itch, directed by Anna D. Shapiro, will kick off the season on September 1. Seen previously at the Steppenwolf Theatre Comapny, it tells the story of a family that unravels during one seemingly average Thanksgiving. Next up, in October, is the New York premiere of Barfield’s Blue Door, a two-hander about an African-American mathematician who begins to lose his grip on reality.

David Cale and Jonathan Kresiberg’s musical Floyd and Clea Under the Western Sky, about a former country-and-western star who ends up in an unusual partnership with a 20-year-old girl, arrives in November. It will be followed in January by Richard Nelson’s Frank’s Home, directed by Tony Award winner Robert Falls. This play, about the architect Frank Lloyd Wright and his attempts to reconcile with his adult children, will first be seen at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre in the fall.

Gurney’s Crazy Mary, which will gets its world premiere here in May, tells the story of a mother and son who visit their crazy relative, who barely speaks, in attempt to account for the family inheritance. Jim Simpson, the artistic director of the Flea Theater — who has worked on several Gurney plays — will direct the production.
