Avenue Q Wins TheatreRadio’s Best New Musical Award

The London production of the Broadway hit Avenue Q was named Best New Musical of 2006 by the listeners of British Internet radio station TheatreRadio.

The show, written by Jeff Marx, Robert Lopez, and Jeff Whitty, received 27 percent of the votes. It opened in June 2006 at the Noel Coward Theatre,where it continues to run.

Rounding out the top 10 musicals voted on by TheatreRadio listeners, in order, were Wicked, Tomorrow Morning, Mack & Mabel, Evita, Sunday in the Park With George, Caroline, or Change, Monty Python’s Spamalot, Dirty Dancing, and The Last 5 Years.

The Broadway production of Avenue Q opened on July 31, 2003. It received six Tony Award nominations and won three, including Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Book of a Musical.
