This production replaces the previously announced world premiere of Ethan Coen's Four Pickups, which has been postponed to an upcoming season.
Based on the Academy Award-winning Ingmar Bergman film, and adapted for the stage by Jenny Worton, the play tells the story of Karin (Mulligan), the central figure in the lives of her family, not least because her own tenuous grip on reality keeps everyone in constant motion around her. On an annual vacation to a beautiful remote island, tensions flare as her husband, father and brother struggle over the best way to help her, and Karin decides that she must take command of her own destiny.
Mulligan appeared as Nina in The Seagull in London and on Broadway, earning a Drama Desk Award nomination. She received Academy Award and Golden Globe Award nominations and a BAFTA Award for her work in An Education, and her other films include Wall Street: Money Never Dies, Never Let Me Go and is currently filming the independent feature Shame.
