The film looks at a diversity of families today, highlighting same-sex parents, mixed-heritage families, single parents, and stories of adoption. It includes animated songs and musical performances by kids and their families, as well as performances and recordings by Ziggy Marley, Bonnie Raitt, Doris Day, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Frank Sinatra, They Might Be Giants, and O'Donnell herself.
