Martin Sheen Set for Geffen Playhouse Benefit Reading of Bill W. and Dr. Bob

Martin Sheen will appear in a benefit reading of Samuel Shem and Janet Surrey’s play, Bill W. and Dr. Bob, at the Geffen Playhouse on Monday, June 27 at 8pm. Jenny Sullivan will direct, and additional casting will be announced at a later date.

The play recounts the story of Bill Wilson and Dr. Robert Smith, two men whose friendship ultimately led to the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous.

The evening is a joint fundraiser for the Geffen Playhouse and Hazelden, a non-profit leader in addiction treatment. It will also feature a post-show discussion with the cast and playwrights and a dessert reception.

Sheen is best known for his Emmy Award-winning work on NBC’s The West Wing. On Broadway he received a Tony Award nomination for his work in the original The Subject Was Roses, and recently appeared in a revival of that play in Los Angeles. His many other stage credits include The Crucible, Death of a Salesman, and Julius Caesar. Among his many film credits are Apocalypse Now, Wall Street, That Championship Season, The American President, and Lost & Found.
