Ricardo Montalban Dies at 88

Ricardo Montalban, the Mexican-born actor who earned a Tony Award nomination for his starring role in the Broadway musical Jamaica and gained worldwide fame on the ABC-TV series Fantasy Island, has died in Los Angeles at age 88.

Montalban appeared two other times on Broadway, in the 1955 musical Seventh Heaven and in the title role of a 1973 production of George Bernard Shaw’s Don Juan in Hell. A theater in Los Angeles is currently named in his honor.

MGM brought Montalban to Hollywood to star opposite Esther Williams in 1947’s Fiesta and he later paired with the swimming sensation in two other films, On an Island with You and Neptune’s Daughter. He also appeared on the big screen in Sayonara, Madame X, The Singing Nun, and the film version of Sweet Charity, in which he played Vittorio Vidal.

Montalban also worked steadily in television throughout his career, including a guest spot as Khan in Star Trek, which he later reprised on film, and leading roles in Executive Suite and The Colbys. He won an Emmy Award for a guest-starring role in How the West Was Won.

Montalban was married to the late Georgina Young; the couple had four children.
