Berrigan's free-verse dramatization is based on actual records from the trial in which he and other Catholic priests were convicted for the 1968 burning of selective service files as a protest against U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. Following the groups' arrest, Berrigan was sentenced to three years in prison. He went into hiding but was again apprehended, this time by the FBI. He was released from prison in 1972 and currently serves as the Poet in Residence at Fordham University.
