RSC’s Hamlet, with Patrick Stewart and David Tennant, to Be Filmed for BBC

The Royal Shakespeare Company’s award-winning production of Hamlet — starring David Tennant in the title role and Patrick Stewart as Claudius/Ghost — will be filmed on location in June, for broadcast later this year on BBC Two.

The film, produced by Illuminations, will reunite all key members of the cast and the same creative team, headed by director Gregory Doran. It will also be broadcast in the U.S. and Japan in 2010, and will be released on DVD.

The cast will also feature David Ajala (Reynaldo), Sam Alexander (Rosencrantz and Second Gravedigger), Edward Bennett (Laertes), Ricky Champ (Lucianus) Ewen Cummins (Barnardo), Robert Curtis (Fortinbras and Francisco), Tom Davey (Guildenstern), Peter De Jersey (Horatio), Penny Downie (Gertrude), Samuel Dutton (Dumbshow King and Court Attendant), Oliver Ford Davies (Polonius), Ryan Gage (Osric), Mariah Gale (Ophelia), Mark Hadfield (Gravedigger), Andrea Harris (Cornelia), Jim Hooper (Priest), Keith Osborn (Marcellus), Roderick Smith (Voltemand), Riann Steele (Lady in Waiting), Zoe Thorne (Lady in Waiting), and John Woodvine (Player King).

The creative team will include Chris Seager (director of photography), Robert Jones (designer), Paul Englishby (music composition), Mike Ashcroft (movement director), and Terry King (fight director).

The original stage production of Hamlet played in repertoire at The Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in 2008, followed by perfomances at the West End’s Novello Theatre, December 2008-January 2009.
