Academy Award-winning filmmaker Danny Boyle’s opening ceremony for the 2012 London Olympics will be inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest, according to published reports.

Boyle’s theme is “Isle of Wonders,” and is also inspired by the industrial past of Stratford, the East London site of the Olympic Park. A giant bell will be rung to start off the ceremony, which will utilize a score by the British band, Underworld.

Tony Award winner and Oscar nominee Stephen Daldry will be overseeing the artistic vision for all four ceremonies for the Olympics and Paralympics.

Boyle won the Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire, and his stage credits include directing the recent National Theatre production of Frankenstein.
