Houston’s Alley Theatre will present a reading of Dustin Lance Black‘s 8 on September 10 at the Neuhaus Stage. Joe Angel Babb, the Alley’s Director of Education and Community Engagement, will stage the work.

8 chronicles the Federal District Court trial Perry v. Schwarzenegger (now Perry v. Brown), the case filed by the American Foundation for Equal Right (AFER) to overturn California’s Proposition 8, which stripped gay and lesbian residents of the freedom to marry. The drama takes its dialogue from the trial transcripts and first-hand accounts and interviews.

The production will feature a cast of Houston-based actors, who will be announced in the future. Proceeds from the reading, which features a pre-performance discussion, will benefit AFER and Equality Texas.

Black won an Academy Award for his screenplay for the film Milk, and has also penned the film J. Edgar and episodes of HBO’s Big Love. 8 was first produced in a one-night reading on September 19, 2011 at New York’s Eugene O’Neill Theatre
