Tarell Alvin McCraney Joins Steppenwolf Theatre Company Ensemble

Playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney has become a member of the Chicago-based Steppenwolf Theatre Company. With this addition, the theater’s ensemble, the longest-existing theater ensemble in the U.S., now totals 43 members.

McCraney’s The Brother/Sister Plays are currently in performance at the theater, running through May 23. His relationship with Steppenwolf extends to an appearance in ensemble member Tina Landau’s 2004 production of Theatrical Essays. In addition, these two artists have collaborated on seven productions and readings nationally. Recently, Steppenwolf commissioned a new play based on the biblical book of Job from McCraney.

Along with The Brothers Size, In the Red and Brown Water, and Marcus; Or the Secret of Sweet, the three plays that comprises the Brother/Sister trilogy, McCraney’s plays include The Breach, Wig Out!, Without/Sin, Run Mourner, Run, A Taurian tale, promise Not to Tell. Among his other current commissions are Choir Boy for Manhattan Theater Club and Again & Again for Berkeley Rep.
