Performances of the Tony-nominated and Grammy-winning musical American Idiot start this evening at the Den Theatre's Heath Main Stage.

Presenting popular songs from the punk rock band Green Day, the show takes place in a post 9/11 world. Three lifelong friends living in the suburbs are at a crossroads. They can remain in the safety of suburbia, or they can pursue their dreams. The hits featured in the show include "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," "21 Guns," "Wake Me Up When September Ends," "Holiday," and the hit title song, "American Idiot."

Using the music of Green Day and the lyrics of Billie Joe Armstrong, the play features a book by Armstrong and Michael Mayer. Under the direction of Steven Wilson, the cast consists of Luke Linsteadt as Johnny, Jay Cullen as Will, Steven Perkins as Tunny, Alex Madda as Heather, Becca Brown as Extraordinary Girl, Krystal Worrell as Whatsername, Brian Keys as Favorite Son, and Malic White as St. Jimmy.

"I am thrilled to program Green Day's American Idiot in The Hypocrites' 19th season as among the first in the nation to regionally produce this musical which perfectly encompasses the energetic spirit of a generation," said the Hypocrites artistic director Sean Graney in a statement.

The creative team includes Andra Velis Simon (music direction), Katie Spelman (choreography), Joe Schermoly (set design), Mieka van der Ploeg (costume design), Heather Gilbert (lighting design), Rick Sims (sound design), and Gabby Welsh (stage manager).

Performances will run through October 25.
