The season will open with the Chicago premiere of Philip Glass' The Fall of the House of Usher, co-produced by Long Beach Opera, beginning February 23. The story is based on Edgar Allan Poe's haunting tale about the fine line between reality and imagination inside the eerie Usher mansion. Ken Cazan will direct.
Next will be the Ástor Piazzolla and Horacio Ferrer collaboration María de Buenos Aires opening April 20. The piece pulses to the passion and beat of Piazzolla's revolutionary nuevo tango and Ferrer's imaginative poetry. Andreas Mitisek will both conduct and direct the piece.
The season will conclude in September with another Chicago premiere, Giuseppe Verdi's Joan of Arc (Giovanna d'Arco). Telling the iconic story of the courageous St. Joan, the opera features some of Verdi's most beautiful music as COT celebrates his 200th birthday in 2013.
