Waitress, a new musical by five-time Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles, has announced plans to open on Broadway this spring. The production will begin previews in March 2016 with an opening night scheduled for April 2016 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre.

Based on the 2007 motion picture written by Adrienne Shelly, Waitress boasts a book by Jessie Nelson, music and lyrics by Bareilles, and direction by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus. Casting will be announced at a later date.

Waitress is currently playing at the American Repertory Theater in Boston, where it is set to run through September 27. That production, which Paulus is helming, stars Tony winner Jessie Mueller (Beautiful — The Carole King Musical) as Jenna, a waitress and expert pie maker who is stuck in a small town and a loveless marriage. When a baking contest in a nearby county offers her a chance at escape, Jenna must weigh her commitments against a rare shot at freedom and recognition.

The cast of the pre-Broadway run also features Jeanna de Waal as Dawn, Drew Gehling as Dr. Pomatter, Dakin Matthews as Joe, Keala Settle as Becky, Joe Tippett as Earl, Jeremy Morse as Ogie, and Eric Anderson as Cal.

Broadway's Waitress will be produced on Broadway by Barry and Fran Weissler and Norton and Elayne Herrick.
