Universal Studios has relinquished the rights to the film version of the Tony Award-winning musical In the Heights, according to Deadline.com.

Kenny Ortega was set to direct the movie, which will feature its Tony Award-winning star and composer/lyricist, Lin-Manuel Miranda. According to Deadline, Miranda will be shopping the product to other studios.

Heights focuses on the tight-knit community at the top of the island of Manhattan and the hopes and dreams of three generations as they struggle to forge an identity in a neighborhood on the brink of transition.
