George C. Wolfe to Lend Directorial Supervision to Broadway’s The Normal Heart

Tony Award winner George C. Wolfe will be acting as a directing supervisor for the Broadway revival of Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart. As previously reported, the production, which will be directed by Joel Grey, will begin performances at the Golden Theatre on April 19 before opening on April 27.

Wolfe won Tony Awards for his direction of Angels in America: Millennium Approaches and for Bring in ‘Da Noise, Bring in ‘Da Funk. He also received Tony Award nominations for his direction of Caroline, Or Change, Jelly’s Last Jam, and Angels in America: Perestroika as well as his books for The Wild Party and Jelly’s Last Jam. Most recently, he was represented on Broadway with John Guare’s A Free Man of Color. In addition to his work on Broadway, Wolfe was producer of the Public Theater.

In a statement that accompanied the announcement of Wolfe’s involvement in the production, necessitated by Grey’s own rehearsal and performance schedule for Anything Goes, Grey has said “George and I both have a deep love of this play, and I’m thrilled we’ll get to work together on its Broadway premiere.”

The play focuses on the terrifying early years of the AIDS epidemic in New York. It was originally produced by the Public Theatre in 1985 and was revived there in 2004. The company will feature Joe Mantello (Ned Weeks), John Benjamin Hickey (Felix Turner) and Ellen Barkin (Dr. Emma Brookner). Additional casting will be announced shortly.
