The Broadway company of Driving Miss Daisy surprised star James Earl Jones with a cake to celebrate his 80th birthday at the end of the Monday, January 17 performance at the Golden Theatre.

The play, which had its Off-Broadway debut in 1987, focuses on the relationship between Daisy Werthan, a 72-year-old Jewish widow living in mid-century Atlanta, and Hoke, her African-American chauffeur. The Broadway production also stars Vanessa Redgrave and Boyd Gaines.

Following the birthday celebration, the production kicked off its talk-back series with the play’s Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Alfred Uhry, its director David Esbjornson, and Dr. Vivaldi Jean-Marie, a Columbia University professor specializing in African American Philosophy.
