Grantham Coieman is a classically trained actor making a name for himself in film, television, and on the stage. Grantham honed his craft at the world-famous Juilliard School of Drama, where he mastered the art of creating and inhabiting every facet of a character. He was most recently seen as the lead role in John Wells’ MGM+ series “Emperor of Ocean Park” and has been a standout presence on screen lately, appearing in Taylor Sheridan’s “Bass Reeves” on Paramount+, where he stars opposite David Oyelowo, and in George C. Wolfe’s film Rustin. Written by Dustin Lance Black, Rustin delves into the life of Bayard Rustin, a gay civil rights activist who organized the 1963 March on Washington and is portrayed by the award-winning Colman Domingo.
He also portrayed the fan favorite character of the ruthless villain Ronnie in the hit Starz drama “Power Book III: Raising Kanan.” Grantham also worked with Academy Award winning director Alejandro Iñarritu on the film, Bardo, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival to critical acclaim. In 2022, he returned to Broadway in Sam Gold’s highly anticipated Macbeth, playing Macduff alongside Daniel Craig and Ruth Negga.
Grantham continues to shine on the stage in both classic and contemporary roles. Fearlessly embodying iconic historical figures, he portrayed Martin Luther King Jr. in his Broadway debut, starring alongside award-winning actor Brian Cox in The Great Society. Critics celebrated him for his run as the Danish Prince in Hamlet at The Old Globe, directed by esteemed Shakespearian scholar, Barry Edelstein, and as Ferdinand in The Tempest at The Walt Disney Concert Hall.
He starred as Benedict opposite Danielle Brook’s Beatrice in Kenny Leon’s critically lauded staging of Much Ado About Nothing during the 2019 season of Shakespeare in the Park, earning rave reviews for his masterful blend of physical comedy and poignant dramatic moments. Grantham first burst onto the New York Theater scene in Jackie Sibblles Drury’s racially charged We Are Proud to Present… at SoHo Rep Theatre. He went on to originate the role of Anthony in Academy Award winner Tarrell Alvin McCraney’s Choir Boy at Manhattan Theatre Club, later reprising the role at The Geffen Playhouse.
Grantham garnered glowing reviews for his performance opposite Rutina Wesley, in One-Night at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, which highlighted the plight of soldiers returning from combat zones with PTSD. Grantham’s role opposite Michael Stahl-David and Tessa Ferrer in Anne Kauffman’s Buzzer at The Public Theater further cemented his reputation as a dynamic and affecting actor.
On the big screen, he portrayed the famed Black Panther Bobby Seale in Benedict Andrew’s film Seberg for Amazon Studios, acting opposite Kirsten Stewart, Anthony Mackie, and Zazie Beatz. He also starred alongside Aubrey Plaza and Chris Abbot in the 2020 Sundance Film Festival favorite Black Bear.
Additional screen credits include appearing opposite James Franco in the JJ Abrams series “11.22.63” and the award-winning FX series “The Americans.”
Grantham is from Houston, Texas and is a member of Group 41 from the Juilliard School of Drama.
