Catalyst Theater Company presents the East Coast premiere
of Sheila Callaghan’s strange and poetic We Are Not These Hands, a gothic romance with a geopolitical twist. Set in an unnamed third-world country, the play opens on the image of two teenaged girls peering through the window of a makeshift Internet café. As they watch the men inside feed coins into computers, the girls imagine what life
would be like if they could do the same. Would they find a way out — maybe a sexhungry stranger or a long-lost relative willing to take them across the river that separates their dismal village from the greater world beyond? When a mysterious man with a gleaming leather bag enters the café, the girls plot to find out.
