Julia pines for Proteus. Proteus and Valentine, best friends, have both fallen for Silvia, who loves Eglamour, but is supposed to marry the dreaded Thurio. ‘Tis pity love should be so contrary. That’s the Shakespeare part. Add a delightfully eclectic rock score by Galt MacDermot, and the oddball lyrical wit of John Guare, and you get Two Gentleman of Verona, a freewheeling musical celebration of youthful love and modern city living that won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1972.
