The Merchant of Venice

The plot of one of Shakespeare’s great dramas, often classified as a “comedy,” involves Shylock, a greedy Jewish money-lender. Shylock has lost his beloved daughter when she elopes with a man who belongs to a virulently anti-Semitic society. Shylock seeks a literal “pound of flesh” from Antonio, the merchant of Venice, when he fails to pay his debt.
