Pacific Overtures

The Signature Theatre presents Pacific Overtures, based on a book by John Weidman, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and directed by Eric Schaeffer. Spanning 120 years of Japan’s fascinating history, the musical begins in 1853 with America’s first contact and tells the story of Japan’s emergence from an isolated country rooted in tradition to its current position at the forefront of international politics. The story is told through the eyes of Kayama and Manjiro — two friends turned bitter enemies as they struggle with traditional and Western influences.
