About This Show

Silver Spring Stage presents the landmark drama Master Harold… and the Boys, by Athol Fugard, directed by Ed Starr and produced by Ed Bishop.

Athol Fugard skyrocketed to international notice and acclaim by vividly depicting in a humanistic way the infamous policies of Apartheid in South Africa. His honest characters and natural writing presented the microcosm of the oppressive and dehumanizing society. Fugard’s work transcended politics and gave an intimate face that captured the imagination of the world stage. Of all his plays, none is more prominent and personal than Master Harold… and the Boys. What makes the play so memorable is the personal nature of its story. The play relates a boyhood incident which involved Fugard himself and which haunted him for years until he tried to atone by writing this play in 1982. In 1950, Fugard was 17, similar to the age of Hally, the play’s protagonist. Only two years earlier in 1948, South Africa instituted its heinous Apartheid policies.
