Carmen: An Afro-Cuban Jazz Musical
Tony® Award-nominee Moisés Kaufman (The Laramie Project Cycle, Gross Indecency, 33 Variations) and two-time Grammy Award-winner Arturo O’Farrill (Song for Chico, The Offense of the Drum) turn Bizet’s passion-fueled opera Carmen into an Afro-Cuban Jazz musical, moving the action from 1820s Spain to Batista’s Cuba in 1958, on the verge of the revolution. One of the greatest heroines in drama, Kaufman reimagines Carmen as a gun-runner for the rebels, who falls fiercely in love with Jose, a Batista loyalist. When the nation’s great boxing legend Escamillo returns to Havana, Carmen and Jose’s love falls tragically apart. With choreography by Sergio Trujillo (Memphis, Next to Normal), this stunning new version of Carmen is sure to be one of the most talked-about productions of the year.
