Widower Charles Condomine sees dead people. Really. In order to research his new book on the paranormal, Charles calls a local mystic to hold a séance . Unbeknownst to the other guests, including Charles’ current wife Ruth, the séance proves a success when his first wife, Elvira, is conjured up. Only visible to Charles, Elvira decides to stick around, and forces a highly witty and farcical love triangle that transcends both the earthly and supernatural worlds.
