The Piano Lesson

August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama The Piano Lesson is set in Pittsburgh’s Hill District in the 1930s. The play tells the powerful story of a family and a magical hand-carved piano that represents their ties to slavery. When the two siblings have different opinions as to the fate of the heirloom, the family is taken on a journey through their past. This production also completes the canon of Wilson’s work to be produced at the Public, beginning with Fences in 1989. Israel Hicks directs.
