Sexual impropriety serves as a contrast to the American dream image so familiar to that of the white picket fences surrounding perfect people leading perfect lives. The movie adaptation garnered two Oscars, a Golden Globe, and is considered to be one of the best ten films of 1955. Picnic has come to be regarded as a pioneering drama for its frank depiction of sexuality and its subliminally cynical take on "love conquers all."
